Showpiece collection 2013

Delft, 16 October 2012 – Jan Jansen today presents his Spring/Summer collection 2013 at his shop on Rokin in Amsterdam. The absolute showstopper is the ‘Orchid Shoe by Jan Jansen’. This shoe is inspired totally by orchids and has been created in cooperation with Art of Life, comprising 40 pot orchid growers. The orchid can be seen clearly as the source of inspiration not only in the design of the shoe but also in its choice of material. The limited edition shoe will be available from February 2013.

Colours
The ‘Orchid Shoe by Jan Jansen’ is a striking, elegant shoe that will come to the market in a variety of colours: fuchsia, red, terracotta, purple and cognac. These colours are based on existing orchid tints and are present in several genera of orchid, such as Phalaenopsis, Vanda, Oncidium and Dendrobium.

Sources of inspiration
The orchid as a source of inspiration can be seen in all the facets of the shoe. The shoe is luxuriant, showing the feminine side of the orchid by using an explosion of orchid flowers. These embrace, as it were, the foot of the shoe wearer. The soft characteristics of the plant can also be seen in the design, because the orchid’s velvety flowers inspired the use of suede. The straps show the strength of the orchid and refer to its sturdy roots. The extremely high heel is a reference to the elegant, feminine nature of ‘the Queen of Plants’.

Jan Jansen says about his design, ‘The orchid has always fascinated me, and when I heard that there is a genus of orchid called the Venus Slipper it seemed to me a wonderful idea to design a shoe inspired by that elegant plant. There are so many species and varieties of orchid, and each species has its own individually shaped flower, colours and unique markings. In the past few months I have surrounded myself with as many different orchids as possible in order to design this unique shoe. I think that in the Orchid Shoe I have managed to create a wearable work of art.’

The ‘Orchid Shoe by Jan Jansen’ is to be brought to the market as a limited edition and can be purchased online and at Jan Jansen’s shops in Amsterdam and Maastricht. The recommended retail price of the shoe is 495 euro.

Garden trends with outdoor orchids

When the sun comes out in all its glory, we want to be ready for it. You want to get outside and enjoy the peace and beauty of your own garden. In recent years, gardens have gradually been getting the attention they deserve. The garden is also increasingly becoming an extension of the home. Did you know that you can place most species of orchid outdoors in the spring and summer? It’s a great way of brightening up your garden table. You should therefore pick an orchid that fits with the latest garden trends. We’ve found them for you.

Orchidee trend 1: Asia Mania

Be inspired by the mysterious atmosphere of the Far East and transform your garden or patio into an oasis of peace and cosiness. Many orchids originate from Asia. The power and atmosphere of those countries is ingrained in the flowers. For example, Cymbidiums offer wonderful earthy colours such as dark red and brown, and look great in an anthracite patio pot.

Orchidee trend 2: Raging Romance

A veranda or covered patio is perfect for creating your own outdoor room. This rustic romantic mood soon has you thinking that you’re on holiday in a sunny spot. Outdoor lanterns, cosy cushions and wicker baskets with orchids such as Dendrobium on the patio help you bring the romantic feeling from indoors outside as well.

Orchidee trend: razend romantisch

Orchidee trend 3: Très Tropicana

Whether the sun is shining or not, with the right decorations you can create a tropical atmosphere on your patio. Bright accents in fuchsia, purple, yellow and green liven up rugged garden furniture to create a cheerful mood. Choose a pink decorative pot with a Cambria in a brilliant pink. Nothing creates the holiday feel better than that, surely?

Orchidee trend: Très Tropicana

A number of orchid species such as Cymbidium, Dendrobium and Cambria can happily be placed outside in spring and summer in order to bring colour to your garden table. But do keep a close eye on the outdoor temperature, especially in the evening. It should not be less than 9â—¦C or more than 25â—¦C. Choose a spot out of the wind and in the shade of a tree or shrub, for example. Avoid bright midday sunlight and enjoy the milder morning and evening sun. Do water your plant a bit more often when it’s outdoors!

September 1st it’s International Day of the Orchid!

The orchid is known as the Queen of the plant kingdom – a remarkable plant that therefore deserves its own day. That is why the first Thursday in September has been designated the International Day of the Orchid annually since 2012, when the focus is on this plant in all its magnificence and versatility. In 2022 the Day of the Orchid falls on Thursday, September 1st. A good reason to talk about orchids: the most popular flowering houseplant!

Design

With spectacular colours, exciting shapes and breathtaking flowers the orchid is clearly no ordinary plant. The orchid instantly brings allure to a space and – contrary to popular belief – is a very easy plant. Few plants can be summed up as readily as the orchid: pure, nature, design and class!

Diversity

Although the orchid with moth-like flowers (Phalaenopsis) is the best-known, there are many other species such as the tiger orchid (Oncidium), Vanda, the pansy orchid (Miltonia), Dendrobium and the slipper orchid (Paphiopedilum). There are estimated to be more than 25,000 species worldwide, and new orchids are still constantly being discovered. The orchid’s colour palette is very extensive, ranging from white to dark shades of purple and everything in between. There are also species with a striped pattern or a tiger print, for example.

Care

A lot of people think that orchids are difficult to care for. The opposite is actually the case: the plant is very easy to keep alive. With a little bit of extra care, virtually all orchids will flower multiple times in a year. It is important that the orchid does get daylight, but no direct sunlight. You then simply need to give it a little water once a week. The flowering period is usually more than two months. If you add special orchid food to the water every month, you will see the plant flower more abundantly and for longer.

Symbolism

A lot of flowers and plants have a meaning. The orchid symbolises happiness. The plant, therefore, makes an ideal gift!

Her Majesty Queen Máxima to Masterly in Milan during exhibition of Dutch orchids

From 18 to 23 April, hundreds of orchids will decorate the Dutch pavilion Masterly during the Salone del Mobile in Milan. The ‘Salone’ is the world’s leading international design fair, with presentations in the exhibition centre and throughout the city of Milan. Masterly showcases a complete and varied design field with relevant work by architects, furniture, textile, construction and accessories companies, designers, artists, craftsmen, galleries and vocational schools for design and interiors. Orchids Info has once again been selected to showcase a lavish assortment of the highest quality Dutch orchids.

Queen Máxima to opening Masterly

Her Majesty Queen Máxima will attend the official opening of the seventh edition of Masterly on Tuesday 18 April. In the Palazzo Giureconsulti – next to Milan’s famous cathedral – curator Nicole Uniquole has brought together the beautiful collections of over eighty Dutch interior designers and companies.

Nicole Uniquole: ‘It is a particularly great honour that Her Majesty Queen Máxima is visiting Masterly this year. The Netherlands is one of the biggest players during Milan Design Week and the fact that the Queen is paying an extensive visit to Milan underlines for me the importance of Dutch Design at home and abroad. In addition, I am very happy with Masterly’s new location as a new setting for the collections of more than eighty Dutch designers and companies’.

The Palazzo

Masterly – the Dutch in Milano is situated during the Salone del Mobile at Palazzo dei Giureconsulti, known as the Palazzo with the Tower. It is the city’s most elegant, iconic and centrally located venue, literally a few steps away from Piazza del Duomo. Five hundred years of history add inestimable layers and value to the spaces. The vaults, monumental staircase, stucco, decorations and historic light have been preserved in the various presentation rooms. The Palazzo is the exclusive domain for Dutch design.

Orchids and design: a perfect match

That orchids and design go together perfectly will be demonstrated during the Salone del Mobile. The exotic appearance of hundreds of orchids in elegant, iconic Milan will impressively add colour and life to the palazzo. Inside the palazzo, metre-high installations, designed by Dutch artist and set designer Tom Potsma, will be hung full of hundreds of orchids. For a week, visitors can see the highest quality, long-lasting Dutch orchids, but orchids can also be enjoyed long after the event. On 23 April – the last day of the event – all orchids will be given away to Milan residents. This long-standing tradition is a token of appreciation for the city’s hospitality and this is how the orchids get a wonderful second life.

Orchids bring colour to Salone Del Mobile during Milan Design Week

Every year the grand courtyard of Palazzo Francesco Turati in Milan is a sea of flowers. It’s a great tradition which the Milanese and visitors eagerly look forward to. Masterly The Dutch in Milano thereby combines design and floriculture during Salone del Mobile, the world’s biggest design trade fair for interior design. From 7 to 12 June, approximately 1,000 orchids will grace the courtyard of the Palazzo in Milan.

We talked to Nicole Uniquole: international design curator, concept developer and exhibition maker. Nowadays Nicole is world-famous for her masterly exhibitions, in which she combines contemporary design with the works of Old Masters. Her professional practice has an inimitable way of interweaving different worlds.

Nicole Uniquole

Nicole creates high-profile exhibitions such as Dutch Design – House of Orange at Oranienbaum Palace, Royal Showpieces at Het Loo Palace and Masterly © – Dutch Pavilion at Salone del Mobile in Milan.

Could you tell us more about Masterly, where we are displaying the orchids?

Masterly presents a complete and varied field of design with relevant work from architects, furniture, textile, construction and accessories businesses, designers, artists, craftspeople, galleries and vocational colleges for design and interiors. The location is the historic Palazzo Francesco Turati, with a fabulous courtyard surrounded by arches and a roof terrace with a view of the Duomo. We have decorated this Palazzo with 1000 radiant orchids from the Netherlands.

In Milan, you are bringing together Dutch art and floriculture. How do you think the two are linked?

Both disciplines attach great importance to knowledge, skill and artisan craftsmanship. So they are inseparable.

This year you have opted for orchids. Why?

Lombardy and Milan suffered greatly at the start of the coronavirus pandemic. I would like to cheer up the inhabitants of Milan with a fabulous orchid as a comforting flower and as a metaphor for a long and happy life that makes you cheerful again. The elegant orchid is the perfect plant for this.

What is your personal relationship with flowers and plants, and specifically the orchid? Do you have a favourite orchid?

I don’t personally have green fingers, but the modern, elegant decorative orchid requires little care and lasts a long time. I love true nature, and have no interest in fake flowers. I also prefer orchids that flower several times a year.

As a lover of art and design, you’re bound to have a few tips on combining plants and art in an interior. Could you tell us something about that or offer any advice?

Flower painters have long been a source of inspiration.
The concept of Masterly The Hague presents art and design whereby the designer has been inspired by a historic painting. I could easily imagine designers creating a work based on one of the 25,000 different orchids, and then displaying them together in your own home. A jewel with a story for your interior.

Hundreds of orchids at Masterly Milan as unique decor during Salone del Mobile

From 18 to 23 April, hundreds of orchids will decorate the Dutch pavilion Masterly, during the international design fair Salone del Mobile in Milan. Masterly is the showcase of Dutch design and is located in the Palazzo Giureconsulti, a stone’s throw from the Duomo. Orchid Netherlands has once again been selected to exhibit a rich assortment of the highest quality Dutch orchids. That orchids and design go together perfectly becomes clear as soon as you enter.

The power of contrast

In the classic white décor of the palace, orchids (arranged by Sand and Spijker in Delft) strongly attract attention, complimenting the design pieces in the room. Hundreds of long-lasting orchids are incorporated in no fewer than four metre-high installations with Elho baskets, and in arrangements with classic Royal Delft porcelain vases. The presentation of a rich assortment of Phalaenopsis and exclusive orchids impressively adds colour and life to the iconic Palazzo Giureconsulti.

Orchids and design: a perfect match

Not only does the Netherlands offer excellence in art and design, but also in orchids. They are works of art from nature that can be enjoyed for a long time. That’s why curator and initiator of Masterly Nicole Uniquole, once again chose orchids as part of the exhibition. “The concept of Masterly showcases art and design. Traditionally, floral artists were a source of inspiration, so the orchid cannot be missing from Dutch design. The modern, elegant orchid is like an ornament with a story for your interior,” says Nicole Uniquole.

Orchids for Milan

As orchids have a much longer shelf life than the week of the exhibition, all plants are traditionally distributed on the last day of the event. This is a huge success every year. In large numbers, residents of Milan come to the distribution moment to receive the orchids with open arms and enjoy them at home for a long time to come.
