Orchids are among the most versatile flowering plants in the world. With around 25,000 different species, the variety in shapes, colours and flowering times is almost impossible to grasp. Which is exactly why they have become indispensable in modern interiors. It is a remarkable plant – and one that even has a day of its own. Since 2012, International Orchid Day has been held every year on the first Thursday of September to celebrate this popular plant. This year it falls on Thursday 3 September. From elegant to exuberant

The diversity starts with the best-known species. From the elegant Phalaenopsis and the exotic air plant Vanda to the striking Cattleya: every species has its own character, whether that lies in its scent, colour or flower structure.

Almost unlimited colours

When it comes to colour, anything goes too. Alongside the classics in white, yellow, pink and violet, there are intense reds, browns and oranges, plus unusual colour combinations and markings. Fancy a lively mix? Combine several Phalaenopsis varieties in pink, orange and violet. For a real eye-catcher, add a Paphiopedilum – known as the slipper orchid – with its exceptional flower shape.

 

 

Flowers all year round

Another plus is the wide range of flowering times. Depending on the species, orchids bloom for anything from a few weeks to as long as three months, and some even flower several times a year. By deliberately combining different species, you can have flowering plants in your home almost all year round.

Every species has its own care needs

All that variety also means that not every orchid needs the same care. A Vanda naturally grows without potting soil and wants water more often, while a Phalaenopsis does perfectly well with a weekly dunk. How to choose the right species

Are you going for a classic eye-catcher or something a little different? For a calm, elegant look, the Phalaenopsis is always a safe bet. If you want to stand out, take a look at the Cattleya or the Cambria types. And combining several species in one arrangement instantly gives your interior far more depth.
